Abstract: The paper describes modern methodological approaches to regional spatial industrial units illustrated by a regional industrial structure being one of the types of these units. The authors outline the advantages and drawbacks for each examined approach, which directly affect the choice of the methods for the analysis and the result of the studies. Therefore, the paper considers the features of the methodological analysis applied to the development of the regional spatial industrial units. Thus, this paper aims to define regional spatial industrial units as a research object in a modern methodological discourse from neo-institutional, synergetic, socioeconomic, and semiotic theories perspectives. The hypothesis of the research is as follows: regional spatial industrial units and their manifestations are known to have specific characteristics and methodological features, which gives unique content to this category. The proposed hypothesis states that empirical verification requires the methods of methodological analysis selected from the modern approaches (neo-institutional, synergetic, socioeconomic, and semiotic): logical-methodological analysis to identify the limitations and possibilities; logical-structural analysis to justify a regional industrial structure as an object for modern regional studies. Having analyzed the fundamental works and studies of the Russian and foreign authors developing the examined approaches, describing the processes and regularities in the development of the regional spatial industrial units and structures, as well as the proceedings of the scientific national and international conferences, the authors identified the role of the regional spatial industrial units in the development of modern methodological approaches. Their work results in making a conclusion about the need to synthesize separate methodological approaches and to develop new methodological constructions which enable a researcher to fully uncover the essence of the category in question.
